I read this book while traveling on a train from Stockholm, Sweden to Oslo, Norway. Watching the beautiful Scandinavian forests pass by my window made me think of the wild woods where Tom and Huck used to hide. Let me share how it felt…

When I was reading the part where Tom and his friends run away to Jackson’s Island to be pirates, this part of the book really got to me. I felt a surge of jealousy for their freedom! It made me want to jump off the train and go camping in the woods myself.

It took me 4 nights to finish it. I would read about 70 pages every night before sleeping in my cabin. The way Twain describes the river and the night sky is so vivid, I felt like I was right there with them.

This book connected with me because it reminds me that no matter how old we get, we should never lose our sense of curiosity and play. My honest rating: 4.7/5.

What I Learned From This Book

I learned that perspective is everything. Tom teaches us that “Work consists of whatever a body is obliged to do, and Play consists of whatever a body is not obliged to do.” If you change the way you look at a task, even painting a fence can become a privilege. It’s a great lesson in mindset and leadership that stays with you long after the final page.
